Summer Holiday Workshop and Master Class for Singers in Greece

GreeceImagine waking to the sound of humming birds humming, surf sifting through sand, pine trees whispering and knowing that you are going to spend the day on the paradise island that once was home to the author Homer (Iliad and Odyssey). Yes Chios the fourth largest island in the Aegean, beckons and as promised The Hap'ning Place will offer singers the opportunity to participate in a one week seminar of singing on this stupendous island in August 11-15 2008.

The five-day course will offer the opportunity to sing every day including individual coachings and choral work. The venue is at a former monastery and the music room, shaded by fragrant pine trees is open to the fresh sea breezes only 200 meters away! There will be public performances but also plenty of opportunities to just take it easy too.

Some recommendations from past students:

I just wanted to tell you that I had such a good time. I learned so much and even just a few days of working alone on the things we talked about has given me so much more flexibility and greater control of my voice. You helped me so much; I want to study with you whenever I can. In fact, could you send me information about you school in London? It may be financially out of the question for me, but I'd like to look into it just the same. In short: thank you, thank you, thank you! Angela J.

This course is outstanding - Chios is a gorgeous island, green and welcoming; we stayed close to the lively little town with great restaurants and a fine sandy beach. The pavilion where we sang is open on three sides to a panorama of hillsides and trees. Just before our concert, we saw two eagles hovering over the top of the mountain. The acoustics are great, and it is a wonderful space to let go and really "free the beauty of your voice" Thea B.

Mary Hogan, Composer's Workshop and Concert

Mary Hogan, composer, began writing songs as a natural progression to her memorization of poems. Mary, inspired by the lyricism of such great poets as Yeats, A.E. Housman and Shakespeare writes songs of penetrating beauty whose melodies seem to spring from the very words themselves. These writers have been the muses for composers for generations and Mary continues in this melodic tradition. Although thoroughly contemporary in her amalgam of musical styles, the songs seem to be a natural progression from the spoken words across the centuries, landing afresh on a new generation of listeners.
